Happy Friday!

School Late Start and Closure
This week proved to be a challenge for our area, as snow and icy roads affected our school days.  I would like to thank
staff in transportation, the shop, maintenance, and the district office for their very early morning work and support. I also want to thank each of you for your flexibility, as we worked through the late start and cancellation.

Student Support
The impact of global tensions continues to affect our community.  With the situation unfolding in Ukraine, we want to let our community know that we affirm our commitment to providing safe and welcoming learning spaces for all of our students.  This week, I met with Executive Director-Student Support Services, Clint Carlton, surrounding the extra support he has in place to assist our students who are dealing with these impacts. Our School Counselors and Social Workers are available to meet with students who need support.  We encourage families and students to reach out to their building administrators and counselors.

Skagit Academy
After a two-year hiatus, live theater at Skagit Academy is back! Skagit Academy student thespians, under the direction of drama teacher,
Denelle DeVries, put on a wonderful production of the Big Bad Musical on February 17 at the Lincoln Theater.

LaVenture Hosts a Mental Health Presentation for the Community
This week,
LaVenture Middle School hosted a mental health presentation by NAMI (National Alliance of Mental Health).  The Zoom meeting drew in parents from LaVenture, Mount Baker, and various others.  This special meeting was open to the community, and gave families an opportunity to learn about the warning signs of mental health conditions.  Thank you, LaVenture for hosting this event.

Shout Outs
I would like to share the difference one person can make for our families and students. Like all our schools, Madison strives to have communication be accessible to all families.
Traci Gromus recently demonstrated this commitment.  The City of Mount Vernon shared information for students and families about a contest to create a streetlight banner to raise awareness of Mount Vernon's natural beauty, culture and heritage. The purpose is to add vibrancy and color to the City's streetscape, and to promote the diverse culture of Skagit County. In their email, they attached a flyer in English. Traci asked the City if the flyer was also available in Spanish. They said it wasn’t, but they would translate it. Traci agreed to partner and share, while highlighting the importance of making this information more accessible.  Kudos to Traci and the City for working together to better serve our diverse community!

Migrant Students - We have 187 migrant students in 9-12 grade that passed all their first semester classes!! Veronica Gonzalez and team are celebrating and honoring our migrant students’ efforts to show them that hard work pays off.  Thank you everyone as it takes all of us to make a positive impact in the lives of our students!

Have a great weekend

¡Feliz viernes!
