2022-2023 School District Calendar
At Wednesday night’s School Board Meeting, the board approved the 2022-23 Student Staff calendar. We appreciate the thoughtful work that goes into the planning and construction of this document. Through collaborative work, the calendar has been created that supports professional development, holidays, conferences, and student learning.
Local Production of Sound of Music
McIntyre Hall at Skagit Valley College is proud to present the Sound of Music. The Mount Vernon School District is proud to announce that many of our district students and staff are performing! Opening night is April 22nd and it runs through May 1st. Watch for students Katie Wagenbach, Madelyn Harris, Gavin St. Clair, Helaina Madden, Liliana Bianconi, Campbell Plagge, Rowan Johnson, Annabelle Malcolm, Jackson Montoya, and Madison teacher, Lourdres Aguilar-Casteneda (orchestra). You may also find other students, educators and community members among the cast and orchestra. Get your tickets online at McIntyre Hall.
Last day of School
This week, the board approved the last day of school change. As you know, the district had been working on finalizing this year’s last day of school, which was impacted due to school closures caused by flooding and inclement winter weather. With the inclusion of the three make-up days scheduled into our existing student calendar, our last day is now scheduled for June 17, 2022.
Bulldog Award
Belinda Torseth, Jefferson Elementary, is the recipient of this month’s Bulldog Award. Belinda has been at Jefferson Elementary for the last 34 years! Those who nominated her shared about her commitment and dedication to Jefferson Elementary and the Bulldog spirit. Congratulations Belinda!
Margarita Toribio Margarito
9th grade student, Margarita Toribio Margarito, received third place statewide at the XXIV Edición del concurso literario "Escribo en español" organized by the Centro Español de Recursos de Seattle. Sponsored by the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Seattle, in partnership with the University of Washington, the competition required a prose piece on the theme "Para practicar mi español, me gustaría visitar... / To practice my Spanish, I would like to visit..." Margarita will be honored at a ceremony tentatively scheduled for May 14th on the University of Washington campus. ¡Enhorabuena, Margarita!
KCTS-9 PBS Golden Apple Award
Ramon Rivera, continues to bring light to the impact that music has on students. HERE is a short clip of why he feels music is so important to the Mount Vernon School District youth. Ramon is one of our many talented teachers, and we are proud to have him on our team!
First Time Home Film
Skagit Valley youth shared about their journey to rediscover their heritage through the “First Time Home” film showing and discussion at Lincoln Theater this week. If you didn’t get a chance to attend the showing, you can watch the trailer HERE.
Washington Elementary Students
April 11-15 was Kindness Week at Washington Elementary! Each day, a different staff member read a quote and promoted kindness during the daily announcements, a special guest reader read a different book celebrating kindness every morning in the library, there was an "Appreciation Station" for students to write and decorate thank you notes, and students received colorful pom poms when they were "caught" being kind. Each grade level that fills up a jar with kindness poms received a popsicle party. As of Thursday, Washington students had collected over 700 kindness poms poms! Way to go Washington Elementary, you are a great example of school spirit, and prove that you can start today to make big changes to the world around you!

Q. Have you ever as a board considered anything other than levies or bonds as funding sources to fund schools. If yes, what are they and why have you not pursued and when. If no, why didn’t you?
We actively research funding for district initiatives via both public and private sectors. When considering student fees, we are always mindful of the financial burden these fees will put on two-thirds of our families and would never want to create a financial barrier for a student to have access to their education. In fact, House Bill 1660 now legislates free access for low income students to participate in school activities.

Calendario del Distrito Escolar 2022-2023
En la reunión de la mesa directiva del miércoles por la noche, la mesa directiva aprobó el calendario del personal estudiantil 2022-23. Agradecemos el trabajo que se dedica a la planificación y construcción de este documento. A través del trabajo colaborativo, se ha creado el calendario que apoya el desarrollo profesional, los días de descanzo, las conferencias y el aprendizaje de los estudiantes.
Producción local de Sonrisas y lágrimas
McIntyre Hall en Skagit Valley College se enorgullece en presentar Sound of Music. ¡El Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon se enorgullece en anunciar que muchos de los estudiantes y el personal de nuestro distrito están actuando! La primera noche es el 22 de abril y se extenderá hasta el 1 de mayo. Último día de escuela
Esta semana, la junta aprobó el último día de cambio de escuela. Como saben, el distrito había estado trabajando para finalizar el último día de clases de este año, que se vio afectado debido al cierre de escuelas causado por las inundaciones y las inclemencias del tiempo invernal. Con la inclusión de los tres días de recuperación programados en nuestro calendario estudiantil existente, nuestro último día ahora está programado para el 17 de junio de 2022.
Premio Bulldog
Belinda Torseth, de la escuela primaria Jefferson, recibió el premio Bulldog de este mes. ¡Belinda ha estado en la Primaria Jefferson durante los últimos 34 años! Quienes la nominaron compartieron sobre su compromiso y dedicación a la Primaria Jefferson y el espíritu Bulldog. ¡Felicidades Belinda!
Margarita Toribio Margarito
La estudiante de 9no grado, Margarita Toribio Margarito, obtuvo el tercer lugar a nivel estatal en la XXIV Edición del concurso literario "Escribo en español" organizado por el Centro Español de Recursos de Seattle. Patrocinado por el Consulado Honorario de España en Seattle, en colaboración con la Universidad de Washington, el concurso requería una pieza en prosa sobre el tema "Para practicar mi español, me gustaría visitar... / Para practicar mi español, me gustaría visitar..." Margarita será honrada en una ceremonia tentativamente programada para el 14 de mayo en el campus de la Universidad de Washington. ¡Enhorabuena, Margarita!
Premio KCTS-9 PBS Golden Apple
Ramón Rivera, sigue dando luz al impacto que tiene la música con los estudiantes. AQUÍ hay un breve clip de por qué él siente que la música es tan importante para la juventud del Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon. ¡Ramón es uno de nuestros muchos maestros talentosos y estamos orgullosos de tenerlo en nuestro equipo!
Película casera por primera vez
Los jóvenes de Skagit Valley compartieron sobre su viaje para redescubrir su herencia a través de la exhibición y discusión de la película "First Time Home" en el Teatro Lincoln esta semana. Si no tuvo la oportunidad de asistir a la presentación, puede ver el tráiler AQUÍ.
Estudiantes de la escuela primaria Washington
¡Del 11 al 15 de abril fue la Semana de la Amabilidad en la Primaria Washington! Cada día, un miembro del personal diferente leyó una cita y promovió la amabilidad durante los anuncios diarios, un lector invitado especial leyó un libro diferente celebrando la amabilidad cada mañana en la biblioteca, hubo una "Estación de agradecimiento" para que los estudiantes escribieran y decoraran notas de agradecimiento. Los estudiantes recibieron coloridos pompones cuando fueron "sorprendidos" siendo amables . Cada nivel de grado que llena un frasco con pompones de amabilidad recibió una fiesta de paletas heladas. ¡Hasta el jueves, los estudiantes de Washington habían recolectado más de 700 pompones de bondad! ¡Muy bien hecho Washington Elementary, eres un gran ejemplo del espíritu escolar y demuestras que puedes comenzar hoy a hacer grandes cambios en el mundo que te rodea!

P. ¿Alguna vez, como mesa directiva, ha considerado algo más que gravámenes o bonos como fuentes de financiación para financiar las escuelas? En caso afirmativo, ¿cuáles son y por qué no los ha perseguido y cuándo? Si no, ¿por qué no lo hiciste??
R. Investigamos activamente la financiación de iniciativas distritales a través de los sectores público y privado. Al considerar las tarifas de los estudiantes, siempre tenemos en cuenta la carga financiera que estas tarifas supondrán para dos tercios de nuestras familias y nunca quisiéramos crear una barrera financiera para que un estudiante tenga acceso a su educación. De hecho, House Bill 1660 ahora legisla el libre acceso para que los estudiantes de bajos ingresos participen en actividades escolares.
